Mel is on the run from foreign mercenaries who want access to the zombie that dwells within him. It has terrifying powers which can give them a huge military edge. While on the run Mel meets Matt Black, a lad cynical and world-weary way beyond his years---he is tormented by difficult questions about the meaning of life (always assuming that life has any meaning, as Matt would say!). They meet Indigo, a mysterious girl of about their own age. The mercenaries attack by night. They have secret weapons that render Matt and Mel powerless to act. But not so Indigo, who has her own, unique way of repulsing the invaders. This effort, however, takes a huge toll on her, and she lapses into a coma. Leaving her with her parents, Matt and Mel set out to a secretive village in the east where a man in brown will provide sanctuary. Matt is promised answers to all his questions from a hooded figure on a windswept hilltop. But will it be enough to convince Matt that his life is, indeed, worth living? And will they make it to the village of San Stephan in time?

"There is no question that you write very well and that it is not only an imaginative story but also one that addresses the subject of what is, in effect, depression in an adolescent boy."

I read and enjoyed the previous book in this series. I was a bit put off by the word “zombies” in the title as zombie stories are WAY outside my comfort zone. But, since I have enjoyed this author’s books in the past, I decided to invest myself in this story. I was not disappointed. This is a tale about a 14-year-old boy dealing with the angst that goes with becoming a teen and still dealing with the death of a twin brother. He is disappointed with just about everything in his life.
There is another character, Mel, who is possessed by a zombie, but Matt is dealing with the kind of zombies the rest of us deal with during our lives. Is it better to have loved and lost or not to have loved at all? As a great grandmother, I found myself engrossed in seeing how Matt, Mel and the other characters in the book deal with the conundrum.
I loved how the characters communicated in their own ways only to find that the others didn’t understand based on a differing position. That is the way real life is.
There are two stories presented in this book. I found myself less taken with Mel’s zombie and more focused on Matt’s. Maybe if I were younger it might be different. It really doesn’t matter since the author melds both stories skillfully. I would recommend this book to young and old since it has gifts of insight to be shared equally.

Running With Zombies edition by John M W Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Once in a while it is always great to be given the opportunity to read a book from a genre I would not normally read from. I must admit when I saw the word Zombies in the title of this book I had prepared myself for the worst, blood guts and horror, which even though I am into the paranormal, I am so not into this kind of horror! But I have to say this book is not like that it is much gentler. The story is more about the characters and their lives and pulling together for the greater good. The storyline is fresh and original. It did take me a while to get into the story, but like I say this is not my usually genre of books, so this may have been the reason. I did enjoy the change though reading this book and it is different from other books I have read.
I've read a number of John M W Smith's books and I enjoyed every one of them. The author's writing is so unique, it draws me right into the mind of his characters, which is what I love and look for in a story. The main character in this book is Matt Black, a brooding teenage boy. Matt has become cynical because whenever he gets attached to someone, or loves them, they're suddenly snatched away from him. This makes him wonder what the point of life is if he can't have any joy in it. However, Matt is also a very caring, funny, and witty young man who isn’t afraid to show his emotions. This makes him even more endearing and you just want something good to happen to him―to make him happy again. After reading the previous books in this series, I have grown to love Matt Black and I can't wait to read the next one!
Another main character is a young lad called Mel. Unfortunately for Mel, he has a zombie living inside of him and if anyone tries to harm him, the zombie leaves his body and goes after the perpetrators. However, the ‘zombie guardian’ could accidently cause Mel's demise because if it stays away too long, the boy becomes so weak that he could die―which makes the zombie an oxymoron, doesn’t it? To me that was a great plot for a story and it made me laugh.
When Matt first meets Mel, he finds it hard to believe a word he says and he doesn't want to befriend him. Moments later when the boys see three large weirdos running towards them, Mel quickly explains that they are just money-grubbing soldiers who are after the Zombie so they can sell its powers to a foreign government. Matt soon realises that the three vicious mercenaries will stop at nothing in order to get the zombie's powers so they can make money. Unable to just stand by and watch his friend slowly die, Matt decides to go on a long walk with him to a far way place to look for someone they both believe can give them the right advice. On their travels, they meet a pretty girl called Indigo, who has strange mystical powers, but when they stop to visit her for a while, Mel develops a crush on her. Matt begins to wonder why he's bothered to come with Mel at all and he lets him know that any happiness with the girl will only get taken away from him and leave him miserable. Mel doesn't agree, and even though he is not feeling well, he says he wants to stay with Indigo.
With all the depression going on in the world and teenagers suffering from it, I found this story very interesting, yet it's quite sad in parts. I was also curious to see what the author did with the ending. Well, it certainly wasn't anything like I expected, but I shan't tell you what it is. You'll have to read the book to know that, but I highly recommend it. This is a great story for teenagers as well as adults. I'm sure it would be great in school libraries too. I am now looking forward to the next adventure of Matt Black, and all the other characters. John M W Smith is one of my favourite authors and I highly recommend his adult books as well as his Young Adult stories, and his Children's Books. I gave this book five stars, but if I could give ten, I would!
